Jagna

Small traces of the mouth of a river can still be found some 80 meters away behind and towards the right of the present municipal hall. More than a hundred years ago, a huge school of “tigue” fish struck the awe of the people as the sea where the river emptied itself shaked and bubbled due to the action of the school of fish (du-ot). This was likened to a boiled coconut milk almost ripening itself to become coconut oil. In the dialect, the natives call this stage as “ni-hagna na”. Thus, the village called “Hagna” was born. The Spaniards went further, by calling the place San Miguel de Hagna. Why Hagna remained to be called as such, and why its spelling changed is yet to be explained.
